Password guidelines for students
Rules and tips for passwords
These login details are used for several IT services. The username and password are valid for the following student services:
- Access to your own email inboxes
- Logging in to the HISinOne portal viaCampus
- Logging in to the Moodle LMS
- Access to the Wi-Fi network
For this reason, it is essential to maintain a very high level of password security and to establish basic rules for all users.
- at least 12 characters long
- a mixture of upper- and lower-case letters
- at least one of the following special characters ( - ! ( # . $ : % = ? ) + * )
- Numbers (not your date of birth or the current year)
- no spaces
- no names or words from dictionaries
- no keyboard patterns (1234, asdf, abcd)
- Simple passwords should not be ‘enhanced’ by adding a special character at the start or end (Pizza!)

1. Think of a sentence that you can remember.
2. Take only the first letter of each word.
3. Convert the words from this sentence into special characters.
4. Done
The following password guidelines continue to apply:
Minimum password length: 12 characters
Account lockout threshold: 10 failed login attempts
Account lockout duration: 30 minutes
Account lockout counter resets after: 30 minutes
